How Is Hepatitis B Diagnosed?

Read Transcript

Like all forms of liver disease, Hepatitis B has no symptoms, until it is in it's advanced stage. So all patients with risk factors need to be screened with simple blood tests. These include testing for the virus which we call the hepatitis B surface antigens, some patients will be picked up because they have abnormal liver blood chemistries.

But since many patients will have normal liver tests, anyone at risk should be screened. This includes anyone born outside the United States or those that might have sexual or other blood borne risk factors.
