Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Oz. If you suffer from kidney stones or at risk for one, listen up. Kidney stone incidents have increased by 70% in the past 20 years. Overweight men are most at risk, but even kids can get kidney stones. Typically made of calcium, oxalic acid or phosphate, kidney stones are hard clumsy crystals that can be triggered by urinary tract infections, or by uric acid.

The stones can range in sizes from [xx] grains of sand, to big golf balls. Try these steps to avoid this painful problem. Drink up to three quarters of water a day, avoid the sports drinks, grape fruit of cranberry juice because they may make your kidney stones worse. Reduce your salt intake, especially from high sodium fast foods and processed foods.

Eat fresh cooked foods seasoned with herbs and spices instead. If you have Calcium Oxalic stone, you want to eat low fat dairy, the calcium binds with the oxalic to keep it out of your urine. And if you have kidney stones always avoid high oxalic foods that promote stone growth like red meat, spinach, peas, wheat germ, chocolate and peanuts.
