Relieve Lower Back Pain With Yoga

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Clark, are you bothered by back pain? Give yoga a try. In one study, adults who had chronic back pain reported 56% less pain after practicing yoga regularly for six months. The adults took 2-90 minute yoga classes twice a week and practiced the poses on their own at home. They practiced a special type of Iyengar yoga meant to strengthen back muscles and ease pain and stiffness.

The new yogis reported less pain, better back function and even improved moods compared to study participants who didn't practice yoga. How does yoga help? It's a gentler way of building back strength than some other forms of exercise. Yoga is known for improving balance and flexibility which are two extra benefits for people with chronic back pain, but talk to your doctor before you jump on the mat so you don't injure yourself.
