Walking can improve your mood, shrink your waist and improve your cholesterol. It can even reduce your risk for diabetes. In this video, Dr. Mehmet Oz reveals how far you need to walk every day and how to squeeze those steps in.
Hi, Dr. Oz here with tips to help you reach 10, 000 steps a day. Walking can improve your mood, shrink your waist, even improve your cholesterol. But did you know that walking reduces your risk for diabetes? Simply walking 10, 000 steps a day, five days a week can lower your diabetes risk three times more than if you walk just 3, 000 steps a day.
Here's what you've got to do hit 10, 000 steps. One, track how far you walk. It's amazing how a simple pedometer can motivate you to walk more. Find a model that's easy to read and has a sturdy clip. Secondly, buy good walking shoes. Running or walking shoes work as long as they keep your ankle stable.
Third, sit less, walk more. Walk while you talk on the phone. Put an exercise machine in front of the TV, or a pedal machine onto your desk at work, and fourthly, walk further each week, increase your steps by 10% each week. Even if you start at 3,000 steps, you'll be up to 10,000 steps in less than 6 months. For more walking benefits, watch all of our Health Smarts, right here.
