Walking is the most user-friendly form of exercise. Millions of people do it every day. In this video, integrative medical specialist Robin Miller, MD, says the speed at which you walk matters—especially if want to live longer.
Hi, I'm Dr. Miller with a tip on how walking can add years to your life. Walking is the most user friendly form of exercise there is. Million of people do it everyday, but your walking speed matters too. Especially if you want to live longer. Here's why, recent research from studies involving nearly 35, 000 adults over 65 suggested, if your everyday walking speed is more than just a casual stroll, you will live longer than your pokeyear appears.
What do I mean by everyday speed? Two good examples are when you walk to your supermarket from your car, or walking around the mall doing some window shopping. Just how fast do you need to walk to reach the longevity benefit? Aim for at least 2.25 miles per hour. That's a little over three feet per second. Of course, a real walking workout now and then, where you get your heart rate up up, and sweat a little, it's great for your long term health too, but the everyday speed at which you get around can be a powerful tool in your quest for a longer, healthier life.
