Hip pain can be caused by anything from flat feet to tendonitis and osteoarthritis. In this Health Smarts video, fitness expert Vonda Wright, MD, shares tips to relieve hip pain, starting with why you should lose weight and build muscle.
Hi, I'm Dr. Wright. Are you bothered by hip pain? Any number of things can cause hip pain, tendinitis, osteoarthritis, posadis, sciatica and sacroiliac trouble. You need to see your doctor to determine what's causing your discomfort, in the mean time here's some ways to sooth those achy hips.
Lose weight if you need to. Extra pounds put extra strain on your joints including your hips. Build muscle. Do some strength training even if it's just 10 minutes every other day or so to build muscular support for your joints. Have your feet checked. Flat feet can throw off your gait and hurt your hips.
You may need orthodic inserts for your shoes, take omega-3 fatty acids before and after walking. They act as anti-inflammatories. Take Ibuprofen or Aspirin these also fight pain and inflammation. Use a heating pad after exercise. It can help keep your muscles from tightening up after a work out. I'm Dr. Wright, for more ways to fight pain watch all our smart tips right here.
