20 Minutes to Younger Muscles

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Miller and here is the tip for younger muscles. We all know the benefits of exercise, but you may not know how little exercise you need to reap real results, it appears that regardless of age, 20 minutes may be all the daily exercise necessary to reverse age-related declines in muscle stem cells, those are massive cells critical to new muscle growth.

In an animal study just 20 minutes on a treadmill, six days a week was enough to bestow up to triple the number of stem cells. It's not clear exactly how exercise increases stem cells in muscles, but exercise may increase stem cells and enhance their capacity to renew old muscle tissue. Being proactive and working your body to build muscle tissue means you can look lean and toned and help prevent future injuries.

If you think you're too busy to exercise you can easily fit in 20 minutes, that's about a quarter of the time it takes to watch Dancing with the Stars. Want more ways to shape up and live better? Watch all our health tips, right here.
