Eat Yogurt for a Healthy Heart

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Raj, and I've got a delicious way for you to nourish healthy arteries, enjoy some yogurt. In a study of senior women, those who eat at least half a cup of yogurt each day had healthier arteries than those who ate less of this creamy snack. They also had higher levels of HDL cholesterol that's the good kind.

Now, it's not entirely clear how yogurt helps your arteries, but experts suspect it's beneficial bacteria might help keep harmful triglycerides down and your blood pressure low but the women in this study also ate more of other foods linked to good heart health like fruits and vegetables, nuts, fish and whole grains.

If you want to reap the heart benefits of yogurt, choose a low fat or fat pre-version to limit your intake of saturated fat, and add a heart healthy topper like nuts and berries, it's a great way to start the day.
