Is Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD) Becoming More Common?

Read Transcript

Now is GERD becoming more common these days? Definitely. A recent study done in Norway found that the percentage of people who have a reflux at least one a week has gone up by 50% over the last 10 years. The increase is most likely due to the increase in obesity, as well as the eradication of H.

Pylori, which is ulcer bacteria. So what are the health consequences of this increase in reflux? Well, we don't know yet but it's hypothesized that the rate of esophageal cancer could go up. This is not a good thing at all.
