Research revealed that an antioxidant found in certain foods offers protective qualities from some pretty scary diabetes complications. Find out what foods provide these benefits in this video with Robin Miller, MD.
Hi, I'm Dr. Miller. Got diabetes? Here's something easy and sweet you can do to avoid complications, eat a handful of strawberry. A recent lab study found that strawberries are chokeful of an antioxidant called fisetin which reduces kidney and brain complications associated with diabetes. Scientists say one group of diabetic of fisetin rich diet while another group ate a standard diet. Study participants who goggled on fisetin had fewer comments during diabetes complications like kidney disease and nerve damage.
How does that work? The scientists believe that fisetin increases the production of an enzyme that helps remove a toxin known as AGE from the blood. There is a strong correlation between high levels of AGE in the blood and diabetic complications, so less AGE means fewer complication and strawberries aren't the only way to get fisetin, you'll also find this antioxidant in apples, persimmons, grapes, onions and cucumbers.
