Why Is There No Cure for Type 1 Diabetes?

Read Transcript

The cause of type 1 diabetes is autoimmune issues for somebody, for some reason, my body produced antibodies that attacked my insulin producing cells and destroyed them and that's why I have to take insulin. So we know it's not immune condition and there have been multiple, multiple studies trying to identify folks at risk and then give them an intervention to prevent the immune attack and damage or to replace those insulin producing cells, the islet cells with new ones and to date we have not had a study that was successful.

There is a government agency called [UNKNOWN], that`s bringing together people with diabetis type 1 and putting them into studies but I'd say the big advance today, to bridge the gap until there's a cure is the artificial pancreas. It's not a cure, it's a basically taking a continuous glucose monitor, an insulin pump that may also infuse glucagon and two other important hormones, that are dysfunctional and people of type 1.

And using sophisticated computer algorithms can totally control the blood sugars in an individual within a very tight mirror range without the patient input, all automatic. So that's going on now, 12 major research sites around the world to develop an artificial pancreas with the tools we have today.

While other researchers are trying to figure out how do you use stop the auto immune attack in people that identified early..
