Diabetes patients can turn to vinegar when faced with high carb dishes to help control insulin sensitivity. In this video, emergency medicine physician Darria Long-Gillespie, M.D. describes how this popular dressing affects blood sugar naturally.
Hi, I'm Dr. Darria Long Gillespie, we're here with a smart nutrition tip if you have diabetes. Can't resist that twice baked potato, or pile of pasta, here's a clever little trick that may help control the blood sugar impact. Sprinkle on some vinegar. In one study, consuming just two table spoons of Apple Cider vinegar before a high carbon meal, helps improve insulin sensitivity, and people with type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance.
Translation, thanks to the benefits of vinegar, their body seems to do a better job of escorting sugar out of their blood, and into the body cells where it can be used for energy. Vinegar is also a great way to boost a flavor of a dish without reaching for the salt shaker. Experiment with different types of vinegar such as light flavored White Wine Vinegar, or rich Balsamic Vinegar.
Of course, the best way to control blood sugar day in and day out is to eat portion controlled, healthy meals, and exercise as regularly, but it's nice to know that you've other options in special situations, when that potato salad is calling.
