Practice Tai Chi for Better Blood Sugar

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Clark. Here's a great way to manage your blood sugar. If a hard gym workout isn't your thing there's an Eastern based exercise that might be perfect for you it's called Tai Chi. It's relaxing, gentle, it can help people with type two diabetes lower their blood sugar. In one study one group practised Tai Chi while another group the control group did not.

The Tai Chi group had half a percent drop in their a1c levels. It might not sound like much, but it's actually enough to reduce the risk of diabetic complications like kidney damage, diabetic retinopathy and nerve damage. Tai Chi particularly the Yang form used in this study has a balance of aerobic exercise and strength training that's recommended for people with type 2 diabetes.

Tai Chi also boosts balance, fitness, energy and happiness, you don't even need weights or a gym to practice it. Try Tai Chi at home. For more ways to improve your health and live well, watch all our smart tips right here.
