Arthritis develops in your knees when the cartilage that's normally responsible for cushioning your bones begins to wear away. When that happens, the result is aching, stiffness, and swelling. Some people experience crunching in their knees as they climb or decent stairs, and symptoms are usually worse in the morning.

If you have arthritis of the knees, try this three pronged approach. First, do strength training to build your core muscles, hips, and quadriceps. Strengthening these muscles can help protect your knees. Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to cut the inflammatory process. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Ask your doctor about injections of substitute joint fluid to lubricate and feed the remaining cartriledge.
