ED Drug May Also Help Men Reach Orgasm

Medically reviewed in February 2022

Erectile dysfunction (ED) doesn't have to sideline you from a healthy sex life. Impotence drugs can help you “be ready when the moment's right,” as the ads say. But you might be surprised to learn that reaching orgasm is difficult for many guys with or without ED. Fortunately, one study says the drug Cialis (tadalafil) may help with that, too.

Pleasure in a pill
Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and with Eli Lilly Company, the maker of Cialis, analyzed data from 17 different 12-week clinical trials involving a total of 3,600 men who suffered from ED and/or had trouble reaching orgasm. The men’s average age was 55. The researchers found that 66% of men who took the drug were able to reach ejaculation, compared to 36% who didn't use the drug. And men who took the drug saw improvements in their orgasmic function no matter how severe their ED was at the start of the study. The study was funded by Eli Lilly and was reported in the British Journal of Urology International.

Though the study focused on Cialis, the researchers say it’s possible that all similar ED drugs have the same effect. Previously, a small study showed similar benefits with Viagra (sildenafil).

Orgasm trouble is normal
Orgasmic dysfunction, as the problem is called, is common even in men with only mild ED, and it also affects nearly 18% of men who don’t have ED. Though the problem occurs more frequently in older men, it’s something you may experience regardless of your age. Some men are unable to ejaculate at all, or it may take a long time. Others may ejaculate without having an orgasm or may just not feel much when they do. The problems often are a source of disappointment, embarrassment and even shame, especially for younger men who want to start a family.

Simple tricks to boost your love life
When it comes to sex, it's all about what puts you in the mood, right? If you suffer from problems with orgasm -- there are a few things you can do to get more satisfaction between the sheets.

  • Exercise. Besides boosting your overall health, research shows that anything that gets the heart pumping can significantly enhance your sexual response. See 6 more ways to have better sex.
  • Take your time. Focus more on foreplay. The sense of anticipation can help you over the edge, according to sex expert Ian Kerner. Once things get going, experiment a little to find positions that work best for you, and don’t be afraid to talk to your partner about what you like.
  • Watch your intake. Alcohol depresses the nervous system, slowing down brain activity needed to achieve orgasm. And a number of medications can also interfere with ejaculation.
  • Focus on the action. It’s common for men’s thoughts to wander during sex. Do you get distracted wondering if you’re doing it right, or perhaps you’re preoccupied with worries about work or money? Try to push those concerns aside and immerse yourself in the experience of sex.

And if you're ready to explore the benefits that ED drugs may have on your sex life, make sure to discuss treatment with your doctor.
