Is Yersinia enterocolitica food poisoning contagious?

Although Yersinia enterocolitica food poisoning is essentially a bacterial infection, antibiotic treatment is usually not recommended. Antibiotics work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria and in the case of Yersinia enterocolitica food poisoning, these drugs have been shown to reduce the number of bacteria found in stool samples. This does not always correlate to reduction in duration or improvement of symptoms, however. While they are generally not beneficial in mild disease, antibiotics may be used in more serious cases or in patients with weak immune systems.
