How does mittelschmerz relate to ovulation?

Just before, just after, or during ovulation, some women feel a dull pain in the lower abdomen. This is called Mittelschmerz, from the German word meaning "middle pain." About 20 percent of all women have Mittelschmerz. The pain usually goes away in a few minutes to a few hours. Taking a nonprescription pain drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil) usually helps relieve the pain. Mittelschmerz is uncomfortable but it isn't harmful. It doesn't necessarily mean you have a more serious health problem.
