Are fresh sperm preferable to frozen sperm for conception?

Sperm from men with normal semen parameters such as sperm count, motility and morphology (shape of sperm), should be able to fertilize eggs equally whether fresh or frozen sperm is used. In fact, sperm banks by law must freeze and quarantine donor sperm for 6 months before use. However, on an individual basis sperm freezing may affect the performance of normal sperm in an unpredictable manner. For this reason, fresh sperm is usually preferred. When semen parameters are abnormal, freezing is more likely to diminish sperm performance.
