Do mammograms require a referral from a doctor?

A referral from your physician is usually required for a mammogram. In this video, Stacy Contreras, director at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Care Center, explains why.
There are federally mandated guidelines for mammography that require that if a mammogram is performed there must be a physician assigned to the mammogram who will get the result. Physicians, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives all write orders for mammograms and interpret results.
