What is social monogamy?

Two people who share living space, provide for each other's basic needs, and have sex with one another and no one else are said to participate in social monogamy. This category of monogamy does not specifically refer to sexual practice but rather to the behavior representative of a cohesive pair of partners. Social monogamy is often synonymous with monogamous marriage.
