The benefits of bariatric surgery depend on the type of procedure you have. Some general benefits are:
  • 50% lower risk of coronary heart disease
  • greater life expectancy (89% improvement)
  • obstructive sleep apnea goes away in more than 85% of people
  • risk of premature death drops by 30%-40%
  • less likely to die from diabetes (92% decrease), cancer (60% lower risk) and coronary artery disease (56% drop)
One study found that gastric bypass surgery reduced the total number of associated medical conditions of participating patients by 96%. Type 2 diabetes also disappeared in nearly 90% of those who had the procedure.
The gastric band surgery also helped eliminate type 2 diabetes in 73% of patients.
If you qualify for -- and are committed to -- bariatric surgery, one benefit is that it can lead to lasting weight loss. The American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) says the risks of staying obese can outweigh the risks of having weight loss surgery.

Other benefits of bariatric surgery according to ASMBS:
  • Helps you lose up to 50% of extra body weight in the first six months
  • Reduces the risk of death from many health problems, including diabetes and heart disease
