How long do the results of bariatric surgery last?

Bariatric surgery gives the best and most durable weight loss compared to medications for weight loss and diets. Results last out to ten-plus years. The benefits of surgery are not just keeping weight off long-term but also sustained improvement in other health conditions associated with obesity. 
About 20-30% of patients who have a weight-loss procedure experience weight regain sometime afterward. There are various thoughts as to why this happens: It could be loss of dietary restriction or just the resetting of the hormones that had improved after the bariatric operation. There are options to correct this, but they often include revisional surgery so follow up is important to try and prevent recurrence of co-morbidities.
