How effective is bariatric surgery?

Dr. Arthur W. Perry, MD
Cosmetic Surgeon

The effectiveness of bariatric surgery cannot be argued. Each procedure successfully reduces between 60% and 70% of the excess weight. Medical problems such as diabetes, high blood fat (hyperlipidemia), high blood pressure, and sleep apnea go away in most patients who have the surgery. The benefits, including weight loss and improved lifestyle, are still present ten years after surgery. It is no wonder that this is the most rapidly growing field in general surgery.

The benefits, including weight loss and improved lifestyle, are still present ten years after surgery for most people.
