A common problem that can occur in women in the third trimester of pregnancy is an imbalance of amniotic fluid. Though your amniotic fluid levels should be gradually lessening by week 37, extreme fluctuations may occur, although it is rare. Your baby usually maintains the balance of amniotic fluid by swallowing and excreting some each day. If your levels of amniotic fluid are excessively low (oligohydramnios) or excessively high (polyhydramnios), this may indicate a more serious condition. These and other factors may cause a premature delivery. It is always helpful to prepare for your trip to the hospital early.
