Vitamin K1 is often used to treat excessive bleeding in newborn babies (hemorrhagic disease of the newborn). It is usually injected beneath the skin or into a muscle. Doctors will be careful to give the correct dose (0.5 to 1 milligram within one hour of birth). Excess vitamin K1 can cause problems with the liver, such as yellowing of the skin (jaundice) or excessive damage to red blood cells (hemolysis).
