Zemplar, a prescription drug that contains paricalcitol, is used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in people with advanced chronic kidney disease. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which a person's four parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck, become overactive and produce too much parathyroid hormone because the kidney disease causes elevated phosphorus levels in the blood. Parathyroid hormone normally helps control the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body; when the body produces too much of the hormone, calcium is drawn from the bones, affecting bone health and causing other problems. Zemplar is a synthetic form of vitamin D. It works by causing the parathyroid glands to reduce the amount of parathyroid hormone being produced.
