Cholecalciferol is another name for vitamin D; it’s a form of the vitamin referred  to as “vitamin D3”. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and is necessary for good health. Adults who don't get enough vitamin D may be at increased risk of osteoporosis. Children have an increased risk of rickets if they have a vitamin D deficiency.

Some food sources of vitamin D are milk (nearly all the milk sold in the U.S. contains added vitamin D), fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and trout, and fortified cereals and some brands of margarine. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your vitamin D intake and whether a supplement is right for you.
