Calciferol, a synthetic version of natural vitamin D, is used in the treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency and its consequent diseases, such as rickets, hypoparathyroidism and hypophosphatemia. You may also take this supplement to maintain good general bone and teeth health. Calciferol works mimicking the function of natural vitamin D, which assists in the absorption of calcium. The active ingredient of this drug is ergocalciferol. It is also marketed under the names Drisdol and vitamin D. Calciferol is available over-the-counter and others by prescription, depending on the strength of the dosage.
