Osteomalacia is the adult equivalent of childhood rickets and can cause muscle and bone weakness and pain. Vitamin D deficiency and its effect on decreased calcium absorption can also lead to osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones there isn’t enough calcium in the diet to maximize the bone density, or mass.
