When it comes to Vitamin D deficiency, I always tell my patients the two most important ways to obtain Vitamin D are through diet and sunlight exposure. Vitamin D from your skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream that then takes it to the liver. In the liver it gets transformed into an active form that can be used by your body. Up to 30 minutes of sunlight exposure a day appears to be enough to obtain adequate Vitamin D levels. The current dietary recommendation is an intake of 400 IU of Vitamin D daily.
