How can vitamin C help people with diabetes?

Harris H. McIlwain, MD
Vitamin C appears to dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow in diabetics. Researchers gave vitamin C to people with type 1 diabetes and to a similar group of volunteers without diabetes. Scientists monitored blood flow in the volunteers’ forearms and found that volunteers with diabetes had greater blood flow after taking vitamin C, while no change was found in the control group. Increasing blood flow to the extremities may help to prevent diabetes related complications such as amputation.
