Although folic acid is basically nontoxic in humans, some side effects have been reported. Allergic reactions may occur, so, call the doctor immediately if these symptoms are seen:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling around the mouth and throat
  • Skin rash
  • Itching and redness
Nervous system symptoms that have been reported with large daily doses include: irritability, anxiety, sleep problems and depression. Gastrointestinal side effects that have been reported after large daily doses include: nausea, loss of appetite, bloating and gas, bitter, unpleasant taste.
