Vitamin B9 (folic acid) is not only safe for pregnant women, but it is highly recommended. A good supply of folic acid during pregnancy reduces the chance of mental or spinal birth defects. Most prenatal vitamins include folic acid, but talk to your doctor to make sure you are getting a high enough dose for you and your developing fetus. Breastfeeding women are also encouraged to take folic acid.
