Should I take vitamin B12 if I'm an older adult?

Vitamin B complex includes vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6 (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and pyridoxine), as well as vitamin B12 and folate. Vitamin B12 and folate have been studied for their effects on cardiovascular and cognitive function, and there is some evidence that supplementation might be associated with an improvement in bone health and possibly a reduction in fractures.

Although more research is needed to confirm this relationship, what has been done to date is intriguing because it applies to older adults who might be at risk for bone loss and fracture. Optimal oral folic acid and vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) supplementation in older people who have deficiencies appears to be 1 mg per day, about 200 times the recommended daily intake.
