Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in seniors. As many as 30 percent of older adults have a condition called atrophic gastritis, which reduces their levels of stomach acid, making it harder to absorb B12 from food. Older people are also at greater risk of pernicious anemia. People who have pernicious anemia lack a substance in their digestive tract called intrinsic factor, which is important for normal absorption of vitamin B12 from food.
