Because there are many different kinds of visual impairments it is difficult to measure the rate of incidence for all of them. For older Americans, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes more blindness than any other visual impairment. More than 30 million people suffer from AMD. Diabetic retinopathy has been reported to afflict more than four million Americans. Cataracts affect approximately half of all Americans who are 80 years of age or older.
