What causes pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is usually caused by a viral infection. Sometimes the virus attacks only the throat (pharynx), but often the sore throat is part of having a viral illness such as the common cold or the flu. Sometimes pharyngitis is caused by a bacterial infection or tonsillitis. It can also be caused by respiratory allergies or simply from dry air.
