The severity of yellow fever depends on the case. Infection with the yellow fever virus may cause a mild, flu-like illness or a severe, life-threatening illness requiring hospitalization, transfusions, and dialysis. Most people survive this infection, though residual feelings of fatigue may last for many months. Of those who experience the most severe complications such as bleeding and organ failure, between 20 and 50 percent will die.
