The best way to prevent polio is by getting vaccinated with the polio vaccine. In the United States, vaccinations are recommended for children before they go to school. By requiring children to be vaccinated in order to attend public schools, and having strict water and sanitation standards, the United States has eliminated polio. It has not had a case of wild poliovirus since 1979.

If you are an adult and have not been vaccinated, you do not need to worry unless you are planning on going to an area of the world that is still affected by the poliovirus. If you intend to travel to undeveloped areas, talk to your doctor about getting the polio vaccine and a booster before going.
