Not much is known about the causes of verrucous carcinoma, but there are some things that seem to be risk factors. One major risk factor for verrucous carcinoma in the oral cavity is chewing tobacco. Smoking cigarettes may also increase your risk for the disease. When it's found in other areas, the biggest risk factor seems to be having certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Other people who may be at an increased risk are people who have ulcers that won't heal, which is more common among people who are diabetic.
