Bacteremia, the presence of bacteria in the blood, is often caused by pneumonococcal bacteria. Bacteremia can lead to sepsis and septic shock, conditions that have high mortality rates. Prevnar 13 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) works by helping the immune system to produce antibodies against pneumonococcal bacteria, which cause bacteremia. While Prevnar 13 will not treat or cure active bacteremia, it will reduce the chances that your child will develop a pneumonococcal infection after vaccination, making your child less susceptible to bacteremia.
