There are some risks associated with receiving the meningococcal meningitis vaccine, but the risks from getting the infection are much greater. Some people are allergic to components in the vaccine and risk allergic reaction to this vaccine. Little or no information exists on whether the meningococcal meningitis vaccine is safe to receive during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There is a small possibility that the MCV4 (meningococcal conjugate vaccine) can cause Guillain-Barre syndrome. However, because this risk is small and the risks from meningococcal disease are much greater, the vaccine is still recommended.
