Escherichia coli, commonly called E-coli are the major cause of a kidney infection. This bacterium, which is usually found in the large intestines where it works with your body to aid in digestion, commonly ends up in the urethra where it multiplies quickly and spreads to the kidneys. Usually, your urine will destroy its harmful effects before it can travel to the kidneys. Infection of a replacement part, such as a heart valve, can also cause a kidney infection via your bloodstream.
