If you are hospitalized you may be at risk for contracting a kidney infection. Transmission of hospital germs, the use of urinary catheters, and a weaker immune system can all put you at risk. Older people, or people in a nursing home, are also at risk because of immobility and poor hygiene. Moreover, symptoms of a kidney infection may be absent in an older adult, making diagnosis difficult. Pregnant women also have an increased risk for getting a kidney infection due to pressure on the bladder and ureters.
