How does turmeric work to fight bladder infections?

Bladder infections can create a great deal of discomfort. You may feel like you need to urinate all the time and it burns when you do. Sometimes it feels like you need to use the bathroom and nothing comes out. You may even see blood when you pee. You may or may not have a fever, too.

The bacteria Escherichia coli, or E. coli-yes, that's the same one often responsible for food poisoning-gets introduced to your bladder and proliferates at a rapid pace and in response your bladder becomes inflamed. A myriad of uncomfortable symptoms express themselves cueing you in that an infection is raging in your body.

Believe it or not, but turmeric may help by relieving the inflammatory response of the bladder. A substance called NF kappa-B is one of the primary triggers for bladder inflammation and turmeric stops the body from making it. Not only is turmeric effective in treating bladder infections but it may also be used to combat Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis thanks to its anti-inflammatory nature.

Additionally, its function as a strong antioxidant, thanks to a component in turmeric known as curcumin, helps it fight bladder infection on a second level as well. As an antioxidant agent, turmeric can help prevent infection in the first place.
