What is antrectomy?

This surgery for ulcer disease removes the lower part of the stomach (antrum), which produces a hormone that stimulates the stomach to secrete digestive juices. Sometimes, a surgeon may also remove an adjacent part of the stomach that secretes pepsin and acid. An antrectomy is usually done in conjunction with a vagotomy, a surgical procedure that involves cutting the vagus nerve in the stomach to reduce acid secretion.
