Speed walking is walking at an increased pace. When you speed walk you walk just short of a light jog. For some, speed walking may be the equivalent of jogging for others. When you speed walk your pump your arms and walk at a high intensity. This form of exercise will result with less of an impact than running and will provide more benefit than walking.

Speed walking provides a great cardiovascular workout without the wear and tear on the joints and muscles that jogging or running may cause. Speed walking requires steady strong, pumping of the arms to help maintain balance, momentum, and to get the heart rate up. Walkers may swing the right arm with the right leg and left arm with left leg. Speed walking is a progression of steps taken so the walker’s lead heel makes contact with the ground before the rear toes leave the ground so it appears no loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg must be straightened as soon as it makes contact until the leg is in the vertical upright position. Speed walking is a good workout and can burn more calories than jogging.
