What are weight bearing exercises?

As Dr. Roizen mentioned, weight-bearing exercises are beneficial in that they help to increase bone density.  Another thing that I like about weight-bearing exercises is that, for most of them, no equipment is needed.  Many of them can be done anywhere, without weights, since your body is providing the weight the muscles need to lift!  Weight-bearing exercises are great for everyone, but can be especially useful for people that don’t belong to a gym, or for travelers that don’t have access to exercise facilities, or for busy parents who need to squeeze in their exercises a few minutes at a time over the course of the day.  Weight-bearing exercises on your feet (walking, running, lunges, and others) also work the stabilization muscles in your legs, which help improve your balance.

Any exercise (like leg presses, squats, walking, aerobic dancing, jogging, and jumping rope) that exerts a gravitational force on bone and muscles is a weight-bearing exercise. The stress on bones stimulates the bone cells to grow, making bones denser. These exercises are wonderful preventive measures for people with low bone mass to protect them against osteoporosis.
