Exercise is one of the best stress reducers available. Exercise can help to release built-up tension and endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that can help to reduce the feelings of pain, promote feelings of euphoria (happiness), control appetite, release sex hormones, and support the immune system. The higher your endorphin levels, the less pain and fewer stress effects you feel. The release of these endorphins during exercise is often referred to as the “runners high.” Everyone is different, and it may take someone longer or more intense exercise to feel these feelings than others. Exercise also acts as stress reducer by helping to regulate weight which has also been shown to reduce negative feelings and stress associated with poor health and obesity. One of the last common stress reducing effects of exercise, which is often overlooked, is the social aspect of exercise. Joining a gym or a running group can help to reduce stress and depression by allowing you to socialize and interact with others who share your goals or passions.
