Your body moves in different planes of motion and at different speeds. A good exercise program always has varied speed and works in several planes of motion. For example, instead of performing walking lunges do side lunges, backward lunges or a lunge with an upper body twist. Why perform a bench press, when you can do super-slow push-ups. When doing the push-up you can also adjust the speed or move your hands in different positions to target different muscles during the push-up. Try doing a push-up on a stability ball or a push-up with one hand on a medicine ball. Adding small variations for an exercise makes the exercise unique and adds an enjoyment factor.

If you are striving to manage or prevent cardiovascular disease or another condition - or if you are healthy and trying to stay that way - keeping boredom at bay in exercise routines is key to staying on track with physical fitness goals. Expanding your physical activity to include different types of exercise can offer you variety. This helps you enjoy physical activity and also keeps your body challenged to see continual progress toward your fitness goals. 
  • Enjoy the outdoors. Try walking, jogging, bicycling, hiking, etc.
  • Get a gym membership to take advantage of the many types of exercise you may be able to do indoors: walking, jogging, bicycling, swimming, racket ball, volleyball, basketball, etc.
  • Sign up for an exercise class, such as yoga, Pilates, or dancing.
  • Take tennis or golf lessons.
  • Work with a personal trainer at a gym to learn to lift weights.
Note: While everyone should discuss exercise plans with a physician, this is particularly important if you are an older adult, or you have limited mobility, or heart failure. Check with your doctor to see if you have clearance to exercise, and if so, what level is appropriate for you.
